Followers Follow

“The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.” (Matthew 21:6 ESV)

Isn’t this the key for every person who claims to be a follower of Jesus? Isn’t this what Jesus actually called his followers to be?

Because we’ve allowed different definitions for the term “Christian”, we really don’t know how to define one. The key to this passage is that the disciple went and did as Jesus had directed. There was no argument. There was no trying to find a loophole so that obedience could still be claimed when disobedience was achieved.

Christians: we need to follow Jesus. Just as it is impossible to not follow while claiming to play “follow the leader,” so it is impossible to claim to follow Jesus while not really following him.

It’s as simple as this: let’s just do what he said. That’s what followers do.
